Head Tracking for Desktop VR Displays using the WiiRemote

jcl5m asked:

Using the infrared camera in the Wii remote and a head mounted sensor bar (two IR LEDs), you can accurately track the location of your head and render view dependent images on the screen. This effectively transforms your display into a portal to a virtual environment. The display properly reacts to head and body movement as if it were a real window creating a realistic illusion of depth and space. By Johnny Chung Lee, Carnegie Mellon University. Try watching “The Ring” with it. It’ll freak you out!!!

That is really cool. While the image itself isn’t 3D, the information tracking slight head movements produces quite a convincing 3D effect, something which I never realized could be done with head tracking.

It would be incredibly simple to release an add-on that alleviates the need for using an extra Wii-mote, though I’m sure just about every Wii owner has at least two Wii-motes. The LED safety glasses idea is SWEET!

    Flight Simulator for Wii??
    (Stupid Idea, I know..)
But with the Wii Motion Plus, and this, it would make it somewhat realistic…

This is an awesome idea. If Nintendo were to make a first person shooter with this idea, i would buy it. Imagine if COD 6 was made with this idea. o.O

    WOW!

    That’s a very clever trick!

It certainly looks 3D, although I don’t suppose it will ‘feel’ 3D in the same way 3D goggles do because your brain isn’t working out depth perception as well as it would if you had a separate image for each eye, but in a way this is better than ‘proper’ 3D, because you get to look around stuff, and it does kinda look like things are coming out of the screen anyway - so I guess this is the best solution!
