Nintendo Wii Hacks

Like all video game consoles, it was not long after the Nintendo Wii was launched that people started to mod the device.  There are many popular Nintendo Wii hacks available for people to use, some of which are merely gimmicks, others being a complete overhaul.  Because of the Nintendo Wii’s motion sensors, it was a prime candidate for console hacks.  People have made their Nintendo Wii consoles able to play Nintendo 64 cartridges, DVDs, and other information storage devices which the Wii ordinarily would not be able to play.  If a person uses Nintendo Wii hacks, then or she is voiding the warranty on the Wii, because console modding/hacking is not supported by Nintendo.

The Wii’s motion sensor remote controller has been used to control objects other than the Wii.  For instance, some people have figured out how to use the Wii remote to control a robot.  Others have even made programs that allows the Wii remote to interact with normal televisions or other devices that use some form of remote controller.

A common hack done to the Nintendo Wii is making it so that the console can play DVDs.  Nintendo did not put a DVD-playing capability into the Wii, so people who wanted to watch DVDs on their Wiis had to mod the console themselves.  It is a fairly popular hack, but most people would rather just buy a DVD player instead of potentially voiding their Wii’s warranty.  Another console mod that is commonly done is putting the Wii hardware into a different casing.  People have managed to put the Nintendo Wii’s hardware into the original casing of the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES for short).

There are several Nintendo Wii hacks that are simply programs that are loaded onto the Nintendo Wii or using features of the Wii to allow things that would normally not be allowed.  For instance, somebody has figured out how to stream iTunes music on the Wii with a simple use of the Internet Channel.  Other simple hacks include being able to watch TV on the Wii or playing home-made games with the Homebrew channel.

If a person chooses to use Nintendo Wii hacks, then he or she must accept that he or she is voiding his or her Wii’s warranty.  This means that if the Wii is broken due to the hacking, then Nintendo will not repair or replace the Wii for free.  The person must instead buy a new Nintendo Wii unit.  Doing any kind of console modding or hacking is risky, but can have great benefits if done right.
